WHY PORTS MATTER
Port numbers tell a host which service should receive a packet. Knowing the common ones by heart speeds up firewall rules, packet captures and troubleshooting: if you see traffic to 3389 you know it's RDP, and if LDAPS on 636 is blocked, directory logins over TLS fail.
The quiz covers 55 ports in three tiers. Rounds 1 to 4 use the ones every admin meets (SSH 22, DNS 53, HTTPS 443, RDP 3389), rounds 5 to 7 the everyday enterprise set (SMB 445, LDAP 389, Syslog 514), and rounds 8 to 10 the deep cuts (BGP 179, TACACS+ 49, WireGuard 51820).
Port numbers come from the IANA service registry; some services also run on other ports in practice.
